Earthquake Response
Main Funding Partner: Internal
Since launching in 2016, we have worked to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of other organizations to serve the Haitian people better. One way we support other organizations is by making accurate and timely data available to them for decision-making.
We compiled a significate picture of the extent of the damage in southern Haiti after the devastating earthquake on August 14th that killed over 2,000 people, injured thousands more, and displaced an unknown number. We did this by flying drone orthoimagery of affected areas and analyzing the results to identify damage as well as by doing on the ground field assessments-data collection.
In line with our core mission, our goal was to help make the relief efforts as effective and efficient as possible. To date, the response has disproportionately concentrated on high-profile areas, leaving many behind in less-publicized, secluded areas. For the areas that have gotten the attention, the response has been chaotic. Aid groups regularly distribute whatever emergency supplies or food rations out of the back of a truck to whoever happens to be there and can push through the line. There is often little consideration regarding who is actually in need and what they actually need.
